Inspired by connection: Craigavon mum crafts sensory play boxes ‘filled with love’

A Craigavon mum has taken her life-long experience of working with Children and created a sensory play box ‘wrapped with love’.

First time mum, Michaela Theed, created Little Bean Sensory play boxes, designed to nurture early development while holding space for gentle moments of connection.

Armagh I spoke with Michaela all about how her new business venture came to be!

Why did you choose this career/business?

I’m an ex-early years teacher, professional nanny, and first-time mum.

Through my experiences working with children and becoming a mum myself, I noticed that many sensory boxes on the market are either too expensive or don’t provide parents with the knowledge to support their child’s sensory development.

Little Bean Sensory was born so I could create an affordable, well-thought-out box of sensory items, complete with activity guides to help parents play and learn with their little ones.

What are you most proud of in your career to date?

Although Little Bean Sensory is still in its early days, I’m proud that I took the leap to start something for myself.

What is your favourite thing about your job?

Honestly, it’s testing all the different items for the boxes with my daughter. I’m already planning and testing items for the next box!

What has been the biggest challenge in your job?

Time. As a first-time mum, I’m constantly being pulled in different directions, which means a lot of late nights.

What is the most helpful advice you’ve been given?

Just go for it! There are no rewards without risk.

If you could choose anything else to do, what would it be?

I’d love to be a gluten-free professional baker. I enjoy baking and experimenting with different gluten-free recipes, especially since being diagnosed with coeliac disease.

What do you think your best quality is?

My passion and dedication as a mother. I want to ensure every child in my care is nurtured and reaches their full potential.

Three things you like doing outside of work:

Hiking, baking, and spending time with my family. I used to live in England, so now that I’m back in Northern Ireland, I try to make the most of family time.

Tell us about a secret skill:

I’m not very flashy, but I’ve been breastfeeding my daughter for six months now, which I’d say counts as a skill!

Most prized possession:

My box of memories—filled with photos, objects, ticket stubs, and other sentimental items.

Favourite food:

Galaxy chocolate—it started as a pregnancy craving and just hasn’t gone away!

Favourite book:

Verity by Colleen Hoover.

What are you currently watching?

I’m catching up on Strictly. I’ve just finished Wayward, and I’m excited for I’m a Celebrity to start.

If you could see a band or singer live:

Adele would be incredible, and I’d happily see Gerry Cinnamon again.

Dead or alive, who would you most like to meet and why?

Someone with business experience to offer advice. I know the child development side well, but running a business is a learning curve. Lord Sugar or one of the Dragons would be ideal.
