Emma Lyttle Alexanders of Markethill

Proactive attitude, motivation and creative flair goes a long way for Emma at Alexanders Design House

What is your role in the company and what does a typical day entail?

My name is Emma Lyttle, I’m the Interior Design Manager of Alexanders Design House at Alexanders of Markethill.

No day is ever the same, my role as interior Design manger involves overseeing numerous interior projects from conception to completion. This includes everything from customer home consultations and site measures for complete home projects to the development of designs in store, meeting with clients to select from Alexanders extensive product library. Here alongside a talented team of interior designers I provide solutions for all aspects of soft furnishings including curtaining and upholstery, wallpapers and paint, flooring, furniture, and accessories to complete beautiful interiors that are both elegant and functional.

What was your route into the company?

I started off as an interior design assistant many years ago following an interview and submitting a portfolio. From there I gained experience in the interior design industry, built strong relationships with clients, suppliers and the trade industry and developed an extensive portfolio which propelled me into my current position.

How long have you been involved in this type of work?

I must be working in interiors over 10 years now.

Where did you work before this?

After graduating, alongside working as a textile artist I worked as an arts facilitator and coordinated community art workshops and children’s workshops. I also have a strong background in retail and was a retail supervisor for 4 years whilst studying at university.

What were your favourite subjects at school and why?

Naturally I loved any creative outlet and excelled in Art and English literature.

Did you go on to university or further education and what did you study?

Yes, I completed a diploma in foundation studies in Art and Design followed by a BA (Hons) in Fine and applied arts where I specialised in Textile design at the University of Ulster, Belfast.

Did you always have this career in mind?

I always knew I wanted to work in a creative environment, my love for textiles pattern and design alongside my desire to work with people led me to interiors.

What do you enjoy about it?

Alexanders Design House allows me to access some of the finest interior design brands and suppliers and I have the delightful task of selecting and drawing from these resources to create beautiful spaces that complement each individual client.

No project is ever the same, be it a room refresh or planning for a new build home, interior design continues to excite and challenge my creativity.

What are the main skills required for it?

Alongside relevant qualifications and training, I would say excellent communication skills and confidence is essential for both client liaison and directing the design team within a given project.

A proactive attitude and motivation to work on your own and as part of a team is essential.
An ability to work under pressure whilst maintaining a keen attention to detail is very important to maintain a high level of accuracy.

Creative flair and passion for the industry is very important but so is a competency in working with and to budgets set, producing detailed quotations and payment schedules.

What would your advice be to anyone thinking of it as a career?

Do your research and immerse yourself in design, connect with and build a network of creative people, suppliers and trades that can bring your designs to life and build a portfolio.

If you could do any job in the world, what would it be?

I am very fortunate to work in a career that I really enjoy, If I could do any job in the world it would have to involve interior design at some level as it really is my passion to create beautiful spaces.

How do you relax when you’re not working?

I relax by spending time with my family and 2 young boys, getting outdoors with them and ‘going on bear hunts’. The past few years have taught us all to enjoy and cherish the simple things in life.
