Five minutes with… Charlene Murdoch of Designer Dolls Dress Hire

Following her recent press coverage surrounding the launch of Designer Dolls Dress Hire in Portadown, we caught up with Charlene Murdoch to find out a bit more about this bold, new entrepreneur.

Why did you choose dress hire as a career/business?

I decided to open my own business after saving a bit of money during lockdown. I saw a gap in the market in County Armagh for designer dress hire and thought it was a really great idea and sustainable choice for the future.

What are you most proud of in your career to date?

I am most proud of the fact I still work full time. This has been quite a challenge trying to juggle opening a new business outside my full time job hours.

What is your favourite thing about your job?

Seeing someone try on a dress and love it! Their face lights up when they find one they feel great in and so does mine!

What has been the biggest challenge in your job?

As well as working full time and opening a new business I thought as I wasn’t under enough pressure I would go back to school and study a Level 4 Social Media and digital marketing course, which I subsequently passed. I felt having this qualification would help me with the social media aspect of the business.

What is the most helpful advice that you have been given?

“Don’t worry about any competition, just do your own thing and you become your own competition!”

If you could choose anything else to do, what would it be?

I have always said if I won the lottery I would open a dog rescue centre and look after all the homeless/injured dogs!

What do you think your best quality is?

My work ethic – if I say I’m going to do something I normally will. I will work all the hours under the sun to get where I would like to be!

Name three things that you like doing outside of work…

Gym, spending time with the other half and my dogs, eating (because honestly who doesn’t love eating?)

What is your most prized possession?

My two dogs…couldn’t live without them! Although they wouldn’t really be possessions. I’m not really a materialistic person.

What is your favourite food?

Pie, chips and beans lol.

What is your favourite book?

I normally read books about The Mafia, no romantic novels for me!

What are you currently watching?

Does the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard trial count? Other than that I don’t have the tv on unless it’s the weekend!

If you were to watch a band/singer live, who would it be?

Would love to see Oasis come back and perform together. Heading to Glastonbury Festival in June and that would be the dream!

Dead or alive, who would you most want to meet and why?

Don’t have to think about this one…David Attenborough, what this man has seen and done for this planet in his lifetime is nothing short of astonishing. I would never get tired talking to him. He is a truly amazing person!
